In October , the color that shines brightest is
Pink
By Christopher Harris Editor
For many people , the colors they associate most with the month of October are orange , black and the gold of turning leaves . For others , that color is pink . The color of Breast Cancer Awareness . October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month , and we here at Southeast Kentucky Life Magazine are dedicated to celebrating survivors , remembering those who are no longer with us , and giving people the information they need to beat this terrible disease — hopefully , one day , for good .
In this issue , we feature a mother and daughter who fight the good fight in different ways : the latter in her work with the Kentucky Cancer Program , the former as a survivor of breast cancer herself . Wynona Padgett and her mother Norlena Bullock share their story with us in a piece we hope touches your heart as much as it did ours .
Another article that hits close to home is by our very own graphic designer Pam Popplewell , who put together this very magazine you ' re holding in your hands ( or reading online , perhaps ). Popplewell is a breast cancer survivor , and was happy for the opportunity to share some of the wealth of knowledge she gained from the experience with others who may just be starting that journey with great trepidation .
Learn about breast cancer health with some of the top medical minds in the area , including from Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital and the Markey Cancer Center in Lexington , and the Alton Blakley 5K Run / Walk to Beat Breast Cancer — a chance for anyone in the community to get out and make a difference in their own way .
In addition to all this , there ' s plenty of fall fun in this edition of Southeast Kentucky Life . We get spooky with our profile of the annual Walker Weekend and Zombie Walk , take a visit to The Greenhouse Mum and Pumpkin Patch , and ask our readers about their favorite horror movies . We also introduce a new feature — The Top 10 list , where we here at Southeast Kentucky Life to get to share some of our takes with you ( and the readers can help in making the list too ).
October is a special month for many reasons , whether you ' re wearing pink for a great and important cause , or a Halloween costume , or whatever you do this time of year . We hope to make it just a little bit better with what you read here in Southeast Kentucky Life !
