For 14 years now , the Somerset Junior Woman ' s Club ( SJWC ), along with local sponsors and organizations , has brought to the community what many say is one of the most fun events in the whole region - the Walker Weekend and Zombie Walk .
The fan-favorite free event will take place Saturday , October 12 , at Eubank City Park in northern Pulaski , beginning at 2 p . m .
" It started out as a radio station project ," said Melanie King , a longtime member of the SJWC and Zombie Walk volunteer .
Back around 2010 , King and Wynona Padgett worked for local broadcast media ..
King said Padgett " wore several hats " in that job and initiated and directed many community events and activities . Among those events was the Pulaski
County Zombie Walk .
King , who now serves as the Advocates for Children Chair and the Vendor Chair for the event as part of her SJWC duties , said the first annual Zombie Walk was a big success and the event quickly grew even bigger over the years .
" The first one was just a couple of hours on a Thursday night ," she said .
" Then the next year it moved to a Saturday ."
She said the popularity of the event made it possible to expand the hours of the Zombie Walk and add more activities and attractions .
Though dressing up as the walking deceased has been the main eventwithin-the-event over the years , some people have always dressed in Halloween or horror-themed costumes that weren ' t necessarily zombies .
As time went by , people continued to become more creative , and though zombies are still the main costume of choice , an attendee can see a great variety of characters from all over the spooky spectrum .
In fact , the Zombie Walk is now transforming into Falloween , a new festival-like concept to reflect the greater variety of themes , activities and attractions into which the event has grown . " We are doing a lot of stuff !" said King . " There will be an improved Halloween Egg Hunt for the kids , A Little Debbie Cakewalk , and we still have our Creepy Cake Contest ."
She added there will be the traditional costume contest with various age categories , and this year they are adding a Beetlejuice costume contest for
