New recommendations released this year by the U . S . Preventive Services Task Force lower the breast cancer screening age to 40 . While these new guidelines are a step in the right direction , they still only recommend that women get screened every other year . Along with leading medical organizations , we recommend getting a mammogram every single year .
As the differing recommendations can be confusing to patients , we ' ve answered some common questions to provide clarity on the matter .
What are the current recommendations on screening mammograms ?
The American College of Radiology ( ACR ) and the Society of Breast Imaging ( SBI ) recommend all women of average lifetime risk for breast cancer
