October is not all about candy and costumes

By Christopher Harris SEKY Editor
October is the month where we recognize the scary side of life . Usually , those frights are frivolous : Halloween costumes , caped vampires and green-faced witches , and grinning Jack-O-Lanterns . Fun stuff .
There are scares in life that are very real , however — as anyone who has ever dealt with cancer , either as someone diagnosed or as their loved one , can tell you . But where there is cancer , there are cancer survivors . That ’ s the focus of Breast Cancer Awareness Month . Every October , the spotlight is put on this disease , and on the education needed to prevent it when possible . Getting your mammogram is important . Staying active and healthy in general plays a role . And knowing that breast cancer can affect men as well as women could save your life , or the life of someone you care about .
In this issue of Southeast Kentucky Magazine , you ’ ll learn information that can help you , and read stories that will inspire , whether it ’ s about people running to help the cause in the Alton Blakley 5K Run / Walk to Beat Breast Cancer , or about someone who has been through the battle and come out stronger for it , in local real estate professional Susan Alderdice .
Of course , we didn ’ t forget the spooky side of October either . A local haunted house held for a good cause and a new establishment dedicated to the exploration of the strange and unusual are profiled in this edition .
We also look at one of Somerset ’ s best new places to eat and remember the late Clifford Randall , a Somerset High School icon , in a special piece written by the person knew him best — his wife , Gerrye .
So dim the lights , grab something pumpkin spiced-flavored , sit down and enjoy this month ’ s SEKY Magazine .
