person inherits susceptibility to a mental illness and doesn ’ t necessarily develop the illness . Mental illness occurs from the interaction of multiple genes and other factors , such as stress , abuse or a traumatic event – which can influence or trigger an illness in a person who has an inherited susceptibility to it .
Mental disorders are diagnosed based on the signs and symptoms of the individual patient . Because experiences and environment play an important role in the development of a mental disorder , no genetic test can determine with absolute certainty who will and will not develop a mental disorder . Additionally , even though a disorder may run in a family , there may be differences in the severity of symptoms among family members . Mental disorders do not follow typical patterns of inheritance .
Getting your family health history doesn ’ t have to be complicated .
• Talk to your family , including parents , siblings , grandparents , etc . Ask about conditions they have or have had , and what age the conditions were diagnosed .
• Ask questions . Ask about chronic diseases , family ancestry , causes and ages of death for those family members who have passed .
• Record the information .
• Share your family health history with your doctor and other family members . If you are concerned about diseases or conditions that are common in your family , talk with your health care provider .
Ultimately , knowing that you may be at increased risk through your family history can encourage you to proactively take steps to promote your mental health and wellbeing . The bottom line is your family history , including your mental health history can help you make informed choices to reduce your risk or guide you in knowing when to seek help . Your family health history can also guide your healthcare provider as to when to recommend certain screening practices and treatment options . Treatment for mental health issues is effective and is accomplished primarily through therapy options and medication management ; the earlier you get treatment the better , and the better you will feel and do .
