a client hears certain frequencies of sound ,” said Caruso .
The higher-pitched sounds like / f /, / s /, and / th / are often the first to go , says Caruso . These are the the toughest for people to hear and as the hearing withers , these phonemes drop out of hearing .
“ Vowels are typically the last to go ,” says Caruso .
Vowels , being the deepest sounds , stay with people . So hearing aids are modelled to boost certain frequencies while maintaining other frequencies .
Caruso says that there are things that people can do to prevent hearing loss as they age .
“ If you reach up behind your earlobe , there ’ s a hard bone . That ’ s called the mastoid bone ,” said Caruso . “ Your hearing nerve is anchored down below that mastoid bone .”
Along the hearing nerve , there are tiny hair cells which carefully differentiate between the thousands of different sounds we encounter in our daily life . These hairs do not repair themselves if they are damaged . Once those hairs are gone , they ’ re gone for good .
Caruso says she often deals with clients who have worked in noisy construction sites for years with no hearing protection , and they often get hit with hearing loss the worst .
And sorry , kids , your parents were right about keeping your ear buds too loud . Caruso says she sees more and more clients who have damaged hearing from jamming out past what the ear can handle .
All of this can be tough to keep in mind , but so long as one maintains a healthy lifestyle and listens to their body , speech and hearing can last you well into the twilight of your life .
