“ We ’ re going to try to start with two bays upstairs , and eventually grow into a third one ,” said Cox . He noted that it ’ s “ kind of ” similar to the popular Topgolf concept , “ except there ’ s an element of entertainment with the ones we ’ re going to do , but there ’ s also ( the opportunity ) for golf pros to come in , and even some fittings and things like that . So you get a lot more data out of these golf simulators that we ’ re bringing in , so you can actually hone in on your game a little bit .”
The goal is to have the golf simulators in by the end of summer or early fall , said Cox . He ’ s also working on bringing in arcade games ,
to stoke that nostalgic feeling many remember from playing favorite video games at the mall in their youth .
And then there ’ s the cigar lounge , which will also be upstairs . It ’ s for private membership only , a necessary step after Cox ’ s original plans met with resistance from anti-smoking activists who successfully urged the Somerset City Council not to amend its ordinance banning smoking in public venues in 2021 .
Those interested could pay a monthly membership fee , likely about $ 30 , and with it comes a free monthly cigar as well as another gift , noted Cox .
“ With the private membership , we ’ ll offer educational courses and things like that , but it will be completely isolated ,” he said . “ There ’ s a filtration system in there as well . There will be no smoking outside of that ( enclosed area ). It ’ s a private club , it ’ s its own separate entity .”
There is also a walk-in humidor for keeping cigars in ideal condition that Cox expects to be fully functional soon as well .
“ We ’ ll be ready to sell a bunch of cigars ,” said Cox , who said that there ’ s a strong market locally already for that kind of recreation . “ We set up at a golf scramble ( recently ) and we did pretty well there . There ’ s definitely a big need for some nice cigars here . ... There ’ s a big group , and not just the men . The ladies enjoy it too , the bourbon and the cigars .”
Birdies and Barrels opened in March and has already established itself as a well-populated business .
