“ The other nurses recently gave me a baby shower ,” Reyes exclaimed . “ Our kids are all friends with each other . Whenever we have off days , we gather to eat and to socialize . That factor is really huge in helping us adjust to this kind of new environment .
“ I ’ m blessed to be part of this institution because everyone is really helping us ,” she said . “ They ’ re very supportive at work . And even if I ’ m home , they ’ re also messaging me and they ’ re really family to us .”
For Madel Alegre , America has been a perfect fit for her and the family
“ To be honest , I like everything here ,” Alegre stated . “ I think this is the perfect place for me . When I stepped out of the airport , I said to myself , ‘ This is a different planet .” I really want to live
here and I want to raise my child here in America .
“ I feel like coming here is really a very big blessing from God ,” she said .
Probably the biggest adjustment for all three of the nurses as been the climate change . With an average temperature of nearly 80 degrees in the Philippines , Janna Reyes was not prepared for the frigid sub-zero temperatures she experienced here in late December .
“ It ’ s really difficult adjusting to this kind of weather , having grown up in a tropical country ,” Reyes laughed . “ You just put on light clothing there and you ’ re good to go . This winter , we were wearing up to five layers of clothing in the house .”
Despite the occasional milder temperatures , life in America and working at LCRH has been a blessing for
all three of the Filipino nurses . Likewise , the local hospital has greatly benefited from their presence in the local medical facility .
“ The international nursing recruitment program has been successful for the incoming nurses , their families , and our facility ,” LCRH Nursing Director Jessica Douglas stated . “ Nurses have been successful in their training and orientation to the nursing units and have quickly become part of the LCRH family .
“ The international nurse recruits have demonstrated competency in their areas and a passion for patient care ,” she continued . “ We have had complete success with the international nurses placed in our facility and are happy to have them and their families join our community .”
