Ask the Readers By Carla Slavey

What was your favorite Valentine ’ s date ?

Love is in the air – and has been since right after Christmas , when all the stores broke out their Valentine ’ s Day candy . Those heart-shaped boxes of chocolates and Sweethearts candies – the ones with the special messages like “ Be Mine ” or “ Kiss Me ” – are so embedded in our culture that many ’ s first memories of learning about love is through those edible items .
Then , there is the exchange of Valentine ’ s cards , and the ritual of choosing the perfect card out of a set to give to each of their friends or classmates . Would little Billy get the wrong idea if I give him the one with three hearts ? Will Suzy better appreciate one with a Loony Tunes character or The Little Mermaid ?
As we get older , our ways of celebrating the day of love get more complex . Should I take my date out to eat , or should I try to cook at home ? Will they appreciate this bottle of wine ? This heart-shaped locket ? What can I do to best convey the concept of “ I love you ” more than just saying the words ?
That ’ s why we here at SEKY wanted to see what our readers said were their favorite Valentine ’ s Day dates . We asked them through Facebook , and here are their responses .
( As always , some responses may be altered to clean up grammar or punctuation . Also , we can ’ t reproduce emojis in magazine text , so some of those may be missing .)
