reasons . Many tend to believe when children are given everything , they ask for without learning how to earn rewards , it makes them expect the same treatment when they become adults . Attitudes rooted in longstanding resentment from past hurts or an attempt to compensate for perceived wrongs endured can lead to disruptions in both personal and professional relationships , ultimately developing into a sense of superiority and “ being owed ”. On the other hand , certain personality disorders may cause symptoms to develop . For example , people with narcissistic personality disorder or other forms of personality disorder generally perceive themselves as being superior to others , have a skewed view of the value of other people ’ s worth , and often don ’ t like to follow the rules . They often display an elevated sense of self-worth or exaggerated self-esteem .
Entitlement and Your Mental Health .
People with a sense of entitlement can be difficult to deal with in daily interactions . They are more likely to create conflict , behave dishonestly and act selfishly . Entitlement mentality also means an individual is less likely to apologize for mistakes and to follow instructions . In workplace settings , these individuals may struggle in working as part of a team , avoid problem solving , behave in a manner inconsistent with an agency ’ s policies and procedures and feel they should be paid more than others in similar positions .
Unfortunately , feeling entitled can also have a negative impact on your mental health . When you believe that you are entitled to better treatment than others or that the rules don ’ t apply to you , you could be setting yourself up for problems . Entitled people have high expectations that often go unmet , leading to frequent disappointment , stress , and feelings of anger and / or a sense of being cheated . These individuals have trouble maintaining positive personal relations , often leading to isolation ; they report feeling a sense of unhappiness stemming from the belief that situations in life , school or the workplace are unfair . These individuals frequently experience depression . Sadly , when you are depressed , you may try to fix the situation and console yourself . This results in a mind set and behavior that supports that you deserve everything you ’ ve ever wanted , which reinforces the entitled behavior . It can be a hard cycle to break .
What Steps Can You Take to Break the Cycle ?
If you find yourself being overwhelmed by feelings of entitlement , there are ways to change your mindset . Working toward being more responsive to others , responsible and considerate will go a long way . There are some other simple suggestions to help along the way :
• Recognize how it makes you feel and stop comparing yourself to others .
• Recognize not all situations are fair .
• Offer understanding . Everyone is struggling with something .
• Understand that you are not entitled to anything .
• Find ways to help others without expecting anything in return .
• Try to look at things from another person ’ s point of view .
• Don ’ t live in the past – don ’ t let past resentments cloud your judgment .
• Learn the difference between needs and wants .
• Focus on what ’ s in your control .
• Practice gratitude for everything good in your life , no matter how small or insignificant .
Remember , embracing change can be challenging . If you are having trouble navigating your feelings or circumstances that seem overwhelming and out of control , consider reaching out to a mental health professional for guidance . Seeking help isn ’ t a sign of weakness , but rather an opportunity to improve your response to life ’ s challenges . Over time , you can learn ways to address issues and how to live a healthy , balanced life .
