Good Food nourishes the soul as well as the body

By Christopher Harris SEKY Editor
It doesn ’ t take much more than a glance at me to tell that I love food .
Eating is one of life ’ s great pleasures , a visceral indulgence available with great readiness and variety . Whether you enjoy cooking at home in your kitchen , or going out to eat for a fine dining experience , or even just crave a six-piece box of nuggets from your favorite fast food restaurant , there are thankfully all kinds of ways for us to obtain and enjoy delicious things to eat .
But food is more than just hedonistic ambrosia . It actually brings us together , bonds us together as human beings . We share food we ’ ve made with each other when we ’ re celebrating and when we ’ re grieving . We associate certain flavors and smells with the idea of “ home ,” one bite transporting us to the heart of a warm and fuzzy memory , a better time and place . Food brings families and friends together at the same table , offering a chance to catch up and break bread together .
In this issue of Southeast Kentucky Magazine , we celebrate food in Pulaski County as part of our annual Culinary Edition . We ’ ll learn about Chef Eduardo Nazario , who not only offers Pulaskians a taste of gourmet cooking in the restaurant setting but also helps train the next generation of chefs at Somerset Community College .
We ’ ll take a bite out of business at the Yellow Bird Bakery in downtown Somerset , where life is always sweet , and dock at the Harbor Restaurant , one of the area ’ s most unique dining establishments , located at Lee ’ s Ford Marina on beautiful Lake Cumberland . We ’ ll also have a little drink with our meal thanks to Liquor Emporium , and talk with a hunter who enjoys going out and getting food for herself — the hard way .
But the stomach isn ’ t the only thing on our minds this time . We ’ ll also learn about getting flu shots with Advance Care Pharmacy , and look forward to our community ’ s big holiday event — the Somerset- Pulaski County Chamber of Commerce Christmas Parade .
So take a seat and cut into this edition of Southeast Kentucky Magazine to stuff your brain full of savory stories and nourishing notions . Bon appétit
