prevent it and make it less severe if contracted . Weston states , “ Even if you still end up with the flu , your chances of having a severe case are a lot less .”
While vaccination against the flu is recommended for everyone , it is especially important for those at high risk for serious flu-related complications or those who live with or care for people at high risk . This includes children , pregnant women , people 65 years and older , and people with certain chronic medical conditions .
Despite these recommendations , some individuals still hold a negative perspective towards getting vaccinated . Weston has observed this himself . “ I think a lot of people nowadays are very hesitant about vaccines , which is sad because we have a lot of good vaccines ,” he says . “ It ’ s the number one way to prevent getting the flu . We encourage everybody to get them .”
Outside of vaccinations , the public is also encouraged to practice basic precautions to prevent the spread of germs and viruses .
Some of these health habits include :
• Cover your mouth when coughing and sneezing .
• Wash your hands often with soap and water for 15-20 seconds or by using alcoholbased disposable hand wipes or sanitizers .
• Avoid touching your eyes , nose , or mouth . Germs are often spread when a person touches a contaminated object followed by touching their eyes , nose , or mouth .
• Avoid close contact with people who are sick . When you are sick , keep your distance from others to prevent spreading your illness to them .
• Stay home from work , school , and errands if possible when you are sick .
