“ Nobody wanted to come out , and just overhead alone ...” said Floyd , recounting the experience of operating during COVID . “ We ’ re glad to see most of that go .”
Throughout the year , Floyd said she does “ pretty much everything .” “ We always have cupcakes and cookies and cookie sandwiches ,” she said .
Floyd listed off all sorts of different delectables that she will serve , and defines her baking style as “ adventurous .” “ I ’ ll try anything once ,” she said . For the holidays , pies are easily the most popular . Yellow Bird starts taking orders for pies in the middle of November when people are already sharpening their sweet tooth for Thanksgiving .
The two most popular pies during the season are pumpkin and pecan . A staple of the autumnal tradition , if there ’ s one thing that says “ Thanksgiving ” other than a butterball turkey and handful of Tums , it ’ s pumpkin pie .
For Christmas especially , Yellow Bird tries to do Christmas candies in which customers can buy boxes in-store for a flat rate and fill it with things like chocolate covered peanuts , peppermint patties , and Ritz cracker candies .
And yes , of course , they make lots and lots of gingerbread men come Christmas .
As the store grows , the bakery hopes to teach classes for people around Somerset to decorate their own cakes and cookies .
“ Kids like that kind of thing where they can come in and decorate their own cupcake ,” said Floyd . “ You get the experience of doing it . You get to eat it . And then you don ’ t have a mess to clean up !”
The store also hopes to serve hot cocoa and treats during the Somerset-Pulaski County Chamber of Commerce Christmas Parade , and is excited to join in on all the activities downtown Somerset has to offer .
