Yellow Bird Bakery ' s sweets are hard to beat

By Keegan Harris
Right on the corner of East Mt . Vernon and South Central sits the Yellow Bird Bakery . Just stepping into the bakery can give you a sugar rush as the aroma of what ’ s baking swirls in the senses like a figure skater .
The bakery sells sweets of all kinds , from breads to brownies . From pastries to pies . From cakes to cannoli . The owners have a mission in mind — to never back down from a challenge .
While the store didn ’ t open in the East Mt . Vernon / South Central location until February , owner Kayla Floyd has been running her bakery for two years , but she started selling her treats out of her house four years ago .
Kayla said she more-or-less “ happened into ” the business .
“ I started to bake at home as a way to deal with stressers and frustrations , and I realized ‘ Oh , I ’ m pretty good at this !’” said Floyd . “ Then I started selling it out of the house , and then we made it a business out of our house , and then we opened a storefront a little over two years ago ... so I must be okay [ at baking ].”
Her skills are more than okay . The bakery opened right before the pandemic began in earnest , and the fact that it was able to pull together is a minor miracle .
