Some of Pulaski County ’ s finest homes were on display in November in hopes of getting one local family a home of their own for the holidays — and every day .
The Home for the Holidays Tour serves as the signature fundraiser for Habitat for Humanity Pulaski County Kentucky . The event is spearheaded by committee co-chairs Holly Whitaker and Lynn Ashbrook , along with fellow committee members David Pendley , Kami Hicks , Sarah Dixon , Casie Akin and Karen McArthur .
According to Ashbrook , Habitat set out to raise $ 40,000 since the organization was not able to do the fundraising events in 2020 due to the pandemic .
“ All the money raised stays right here in Pulaski County ,” Whitaker noted . “ We primarily depend on the generosity of local businesses and individuals .”
In addition to home building , Habitat for Humanity has a program called “ Love Your Neighbor ” which helps local individuals or families with outdoor repairs or renovations such as ramps , roofing , and landscaping .
Whitaker noted that due to the pandemic , the organization couldn ’ t do much fundraising last year . “ We ’ re really in a crunch trying to raise the money ,” she said . “ To keep our affiliation with the national Habitat for Humanity , we have to have our next house completed by July 1 , 2023 . We plan to start that house next March .”
All three homes featured on the 2021 tour are part of the “ Harvey ’ s Hill ” area of downtown Somerset ’ s North Main Street , which is included in the National Register of Historic Places . The area was named for William Harvey , who owned most of the lots and whose great-grandson ( George Joplin III ) would serve as publisher of the Commonwealth Journal for many years .
In addition to tour tickets , The Shine House also hosted a silent auction in the yoga studio and two local businesses , The Mole Hole and Mustard Seed Trading Co ., donated 10 % of sales over the two days that the tour was held .
If you would like to be a ‘ Friend of Habitat ’ you may make a onetime donation of $ 1000 or on-going each year . Anyone interested in donating to the Habitat for Humanity Pulaski County are also welcome to mail contributions to P . O . Box 1685 , Somerset , KY 42502 .
