We all have our own way back to school

By Christopher Harris SEKY Editor
What does “ Back to School ” mean to you ?
The concept of “ Back to School ” was much different for me in my teenage years than it was earlier in childhood . Up until the eighth grade , I was homeschooled . So “ school ” was not a Monday-through- Friday , 8 a . m-3 p . m . in-a-specific-location experience for me . It was all the time , anywhere and everywhere , at any point during the year . Lessons were held over outdoor picnics on sunny days , with booksand-tape during car rides , and whenever it was convenient to fit something in . I loved learning , voraciously consumed any reading material I could get my hands on , and enjoyed the luxury of sleeping in on a weekday .
Obviously , much of that changed when I started public school in the eighth grade . “ Back to School ” now meant what it does for so many others : preparing for a routine . A different schedule . And a lot of challenges ahead .
But I can ’ t be more grateful to the good people at Science Hill School for making my transition to a different type of educational experience as easy and seamless as possible . It was the perfect environment for me to step into , with intimate classrooms and a family atmosphere . From there I went to Somerset High School , made a lot of new friends , had a lot of memorable experiences , and prepared myself to step into adulthood in the years to come .
We all have different ways we prepare to go back to school . Different things we ’ re excited about , different things we worry about , different things we need as we move forward .
I hope all those things lead to positive experiences . To cherished memories . To valuable life lessons and being equipped with what you need to succeed in life .
That ’ s the best we can hope for on our way back to school .
