Simpson said the process for becoming either a foster or an adopter is the same .
“ We have an application that they fill out . We check references . Usually they have animals or have had animals so we check with their vets to see if they were good about keeping their animals up to date .”
All foster families have to do is make sure they take care of them and take them to the vet as needed . “ We provide food and pay for the vet , but the foster does need to be able to take them to the vet . It ’ s not really an expense for the foster in terms of food or bedding , because we provide that .”
Their biggest need right now is for foster homes and for them to be local , she said . They do have some foster homes that are outside of Pulaski , but a lot of times those people are unable to bring pets in for adoption events , which makes it harder for them to be adopted out .
The organization also has a Silver Paws for Silver Hearts program , in which senior animals are paired with senior humans , who can keep them and take care of them .
Animals in this program are usually 7 years old and older , and the Humane Society helps with costs associated with the animal , including vet visits .
Simpson said she understands how
the cost of healthcare for an animal seems daunting for some people . She knows that there are people who may be discouraged from helping an animal or rescuing one they see in need because vet offices usually require money up front to do more than just a basic screening .
“ They ’ ll say , ‘ It ’ s not even my animal . I found it ,’” Simpson said . When that happens , the vets know to reach out to the Humane Society .
The organization then works to be responsible for the bill and will find it a place to stay once it heals .
