they didn ’ t think she would live has a wonderful life with Simpson and her family .
And by family , Simpson means the nine dogs she currently has as hers , the six she ’ s keeping as fosters , and the 29 or so cats that live with her on a six-acre property .
That ’ s not counting the fact that her daughter , son-in-law and their nine dogs live with them as well .
At night , all the dogs sleep inside except for one who prefers to stay out on the front porch , she said .
“ Most of them sleep on my bed with me ,” Simpson said . “ I have from a 7-pound chihuahua all the way up to a 75-pound – I think he ’ s a Great Pyrenees mix .”
Simpson is also currently keeping a brother and sister duo , named Frost and Ivory . Those two were found in the woods by a wire crate and an empty bag of dog food .
“ Whoever left them there probably put the dog food in the crate and didn ’ t lock
the door , and just left them ,” she said .
They are “ very bonded ” and need to be near each other , she said , even though they are doing well in the pack of dogs .
There are many dogs who are taken in by the Humane Society who have physical problems , but many more who have phycological issues , whether due to neglect or outright abuse . Some of those dogs get fostered or adopted , but many get looked over for adoption because of either their medical needs or the need of the owner to work with them to gain trust .
“ It takes a lot of patience and a lot of work ” to get a dog where it is able to be adopted out , Simpson said . She has one , Mossy , who has a lot of anxiety . After taking her to several of the Humane Society ’ s adoption events and realizing she was not happy in public , Simpson kept her at home where she is happier .
“ The first adoption day I took her to , I told everybody ‘ She ’ s very fearful . We have to be careful with her .’ Well , one
of the volunteers opened the door – at adoption day they ’ re in cages – and Mossy ran out and went underneath the cages . ... So the volunteer reached under to pull her out and she bit her . Pretty bad , too .”
A lot of times , the dogs just don ’ t need to go through the stress of dealing with adoption days , Simpson said .
The Humane Society hosts adoption days twice a month , usually on the first and third Saturdays . Those usually take place at their building , located on Chris Way off of Ky . 914 , but sometimes other events pop up around the county .
The society is always looking for people either willing to adopt or to become a foster for an animal before it finds its forever home .
“ All of our animals are in foster homes , and we don ’ t have enough foster homes ,” Simpson said . “ Plus , when you get a dog , it ’ s got to fit in . At my house , they are so used to other animals it ’ s like five seconds of sniffing and they ’ re okay ,” she laughed .
