We have hit the hot part of the schedule, where there is a lot going on week in and week out. This next few weeks will be busy for the staff of the speedway.
This Wednesday, the 28th, will be the 14th annual Open Wheel Wednesday. Over 45 modified drivers have entered this event, which has come to be one of the biggest modified races on the east coast.
Drivers from the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour, the Race of Champions Modified Tour, the Valenti Modified Racing Series, the Exit Realty Modified Series and tracks in NY and PA are getting ready to compete for the $10,000 prize. Defending champion of this event Doug Coby has sent his entry in, as well as the winners of all but the first and third winners are planning on competing in this event. Only Donnie Lia, who won the inaugural event, and Vinny Annarummo, who picked up his first modified win in this event, are not entered. Annarummo has retired from racing, and Lia is running a part time schedule.
Also on tap on the 28th is the annual Boston Louie Memorial for the NEMA Midgets and NEMA Lites. Word has it that there should be almost 50 cars on hand for NEMA as well. This is the biggest midget event on the east coast each year, honoring the man that drove a million miles over the course of his career.
The action starts at 6:30, and with just a $25.00 admission for adults, this is a CAN’T MISS event.
When racing resumes on the 8th of July, the Late Models take center stage with their second round of the Phil’s Propane Triple Crown series, and the annual Mikey Marfeo memorial. Another showcase event for the Late Models, which, if it lives up to what we have seen so far from them this year, should be another showcase event.
We also take a step back in time on that night, as the Senior Tour Auto Racers come to town for their annual event. Coupes, Pintos, Gremlins, Coaches and more will take us back to yesteryear. The Pro Stocks, Sportsman and Sport Trucks will be part of the show as well.
From there, we go into another mid week special, with the Pro Stock/Super Late Model Nationals. The entries are rolling in, and this should be another great event. While I can’t promise a finish as exciting as last year, but it will be another epic event.
The Pro4s will make their only appearance of the season on that night, as well as the INEX Legends.
That Saturday, July 15th, the American Canadian Tour comes to town for a 100 lap event. The NEMA Lites will also be part of that show, as the Pro Stocks will be silent on that night, coming off the Nationals, just a few days before.
July 22 has the New England Truck Series makes their Seekonk debut. Our Sport Trucks will have a rare night off. The Pro Stocks will be going 65 laps with the Late Models and Sportsman competing that night as well.
The following week is Shriners night, with our annual Tryke race event.
That’s just the month of July.
We witnessed another great night of action this past week. The Late Models continue to show some great side by side racing. Charlie Rose showed his strength and raced wheel to wheel with defending champion Dylan Estrella. The pair put on a great show for over 15 laps, battling for the lead. Over the final handful of laps, Nick Johnson was able to work past for second.
The Sportsman division was putting on the same type of show, as Tommy Adams and Rob Murphy raced wheel to wheel for the lead. Well, that was until Murphy lost a driveshaft competing for the win. Rob and his team have been struggling over the past few weeks, and this was the first good run he has had since his main car ended up on its side.
Unfortunately, Adams did not make it past the post race tech, and this gave the win to Dick Benoit. This was the first time this season that Dick had his Danny Cabral owned machine running properly.
The Sport Trucks weren’t going to be outdone, and a late race restart set up a great duel between Dave Lougee, Mike Lopes and Chase Belcher. Lougee held on for his first win of the season with Chase and Mike following.
The Granite State Pro Stocks made their debut, and to no one’s surprise, Dave Darling, who has been one of the fastest cars week in and week out, picked up the win. Well, more like dominated the event. Tom Scully was second, and Travis Benjamin was third.
