COBY NABS BOSTON LOUIE MEMORIAL

It was a big “Two-Fer” for Doug Coby at Open Wheel Wednesday. He claimed the win in NEMA’s Boston Louie Memorial moments before leaping into a modified and grabbing the win in the Tri-Track Open modified races.

Coby started third, behind Todd Bertrand and Anthony Nocella. The trio pulled away from the green and dominated the front in a duel for supremacy. Bertrand went directly to the front from the pole and Nocella grabbed his bumper with Coby in hot pursuit. They would remain in that order through half the race. The field stretched out over the distance and John Zych came up to fourth while Randy Cabral claimed fourth. Avery Stoehr and Jeff Abold debated behind them as 15 of the 29 laps unwound.

Change began on lap 14, as Nocella powered past Bertrand into the lead. Nocella then fell victim to Cabral as the debate intensified, on lap 22. Abold powered up and outrushed Cabral for second, while Zych grabbed fourth, leaving Cabral in fifth.

Bertrand lost power and the car stopped in turn four. He had to be pushed to the pits. Nocella and Coby lined up and Cabral came around them on the outside, but Bethany Stoehr spun on the backstretch. The second restart saw Nocella lose power. Cabral, coming around, caught his wheel and vaulted into the air.

The lap was snake-bitten as the next try was called back on a false start.

Finally they were away and Coby ran directly to the front. Abold Leapt past Zych to second, but it was brief as Cabral, recovering, roared up and past him on lap 24. Abold grabbed third and Nocella settled into fourth. Jim Chambers passed Avery Stoehr into fifth.

The final five laps ran single file with no position changes, bringing them across the stripe in the same order.

Seth Carlson claimed sixth, followed by Doug Cleveland, Bethany Stoehr, Zych and Avery Stoehr.

Following his podium appearance for the win, Coby drove to the pits and stepped from the midget into his modified to spend 100 laps in garnering his second win on the evening, and a payoff of 10 thousand dollars.
