Seekonk Speedway Race Magazine August 26-27 Weekend Recap | Page 7

What a difference a week makes. When I sat down to write last week, there was nothing coming to my head that makes sense. Of course, there were many things to talk about, but putting them into words that made sense wasn’t happening. I’m sorry I missed you guys last week. But I’m back. Well, tonight anyways. LOL

Two events ago, Tom Scully Jr rode into the night leading the championship standings over defending champion Angelo Belsito by four points. At the end of the night, he and fourth place points runner Mike Brightman got together and ended their nights early. With that, Angelo took over the lead, dropping Tom out of the lead.

One week later, both Mike and Tom were back in action, and showing that the accident wasn’t slowing them down at all. I spoke with Mike and Dave Brightman, and they felt lucky that the damage was not major. Expensive and time consuming yes, but the damage did not hurt the chassis itself. Several teams contacted Mike about parts needed to repair the car, including Dave Darling and Kevin Casper, Dave Berghman and Armand Roy. That, with the help of friends and family, they got the car back together and Mike did a great job coming home fifth.

On Tom’s end, they were able to get the car disassembled and up to Distance Chassis in Maine, and were able to get the car back in time to compete. Pretty good when the chassis builder was getting ready for the biggest short track race in the country. Tom did have offers as well. Dave Darling, Kevin Casper, Joe Kohler and Ray Parent all offered their cars to Scully to compete. They weren’t needed.

As the field assembled for their final round of the Phil’s Propane Triple Crown Series, four drivers were up for the TC Championship. Angelo Belito, Fred Astle, Tom and Mike. For the first twenty five laps, it looked like Mike might be the one to beat, as he and Ryan Lineham put on a great show, racing wheel to wheel, swapping the lead back and forth. They raced that way until Angelo broke just shy of the halfway point, taking him out of the race.

After the restart, which was the only caution of the race, Ryan took over, but it wasn’t long before Scully moved past and into the lead. Over the final twenty laps, Dave Darling moved to Tom’s rear bumper, but was unable to take over. Fred struggled throughout the race and finished in the top ten, but was never a factor.

With that, Tom picked up the Triple Crown for the second time. He also finds himself atop the championship standings with three races left for the Pro Stocks.

The Sport Trucks are the only other NWAAS division with a tight points chase. Mike Cavallaro and Chase Belcher are also entangled in a tight fight for the title. With four race remaining, thie one is another that will go down the final laps.

If you haven’t heard,, the modifieds are coming back. Saturday, Sept. 10th, the Anytime Realty 150 will take place here at Sekonk
