HOW TO HELP PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES FEEL PART OF YOUR COMMUNITY
Mrs . Shoshi Kofman shares her top tips on how to support people with disabilities and their families within your community .
• Try not to stare . People with disabilities are often aware that they are different ; staring will only embarass them .
• Remember that parents have their own team of educational advisors . Don ’ t volunteer advice unless you ' re asked .
• Check with parents or other family members before you interact with a person with disabilities that you ' ve just met . For some individuals , social interaction with strangers can be upsetting .
• Even if a person with disabilities doesn ' t want to interact directly , you can still make your community an inviting place . Be friendly and give them “ space ,” literally , by moving chairs out of the way for a wheelchair , or figuratively , by smiling and making them feel welcome .
