The moment has arrived, after 9 months of waiting you will finally have your baby in your arms. Of course you are very excited, but also nervous. Will contractions really hurt me? Will labor be very long? All those fears will be dispelled once your son or daughter is born.
However, the arduous task of bringing a child to the world does not end there. There are reactions and changes that your body will experience after giving birth and that, surely, nobody told you what would happen. So that you are prepared -and do not be scared- we tell you what are those processes that your organism will face.
# 1 Urinary incontinence
Once your baby is born and you no longer have a pregnant belly, the organs of your body should return to their original position. This causes a rearrangement in the bladder that can result in involuntary leaking of urine.
Do not be scared, this is temporary and you can solve it with sanitary napkins or even diapers for adults, especially so that you feel free to laugh, cry and move without the fear that incontinence appears at the least opportune moments.
# 2 Vaginal discharge
Do not be alarmed if you notice vaginal discharge (called lochia) in your underwear, even if it is abundant and reddish in color. It is normal to be present the first few days and little by little it will be less thick and it will disappear. This is also related to the hormonal readjustments your body suffers after having your baby. Avoid using tampons during this period, because you run the risk of an infection.
# 3 Small hemorrhages
In addition to the reddish vaginal discharge, you are likely to have small hemorrhages. Do not worry, your body is prepared to recover all the blood you lost during and after the delivery.
This situation does not occur in all women and may be due to the fact that after the birth the uterus does not contract properly and, therefore, the blood vessels that rupture after the expulsion of the placenta do not close completely.
The small bleeding's will last a couple of days and little by little they will disappear. If the situation does not improve in a short time, it is better to go with your doctor to make sure you do not have low platelets or any other condition.
# 4 Vaginal dryness
It is normal that during the first days after childbirth, vaginal lubrication decreases and a dryness develops that in turn can cause sexual intercourse to be painful. This can last several days, weeks or even some months, but little by little it will get better. However, if the dryness lasts a long time or worsens, it is recommended that you go with your doctor to rule out any other health problem.
# 5 Contractions
As we mentioned before, contractions are the way the body stops bleeding from blood vessels that rupture during pregnancy. But do not worry, they are not as painful as those of childbirth, rather they feel similar to colic or there are even women who only feel small discomfort.
