Richard’s impression on the play is brilliant, in his article, he is detailing why Oscar Wilde laughed about the upper classes in an intellectual and sophisticated way. This author gives a short explanation of what a comedy of manner really is, this kind of theater should be realistic and possible in order the audience believe and accept the reality at it is. Forest explains this with the characters of the play, for instance, the intentional exaggerations of what they perform in a realistic scene. The real situations lived in that time represented in the act like ridiculousness is what it makes significant the comedy on this play. Through this information, the item suggests that the most hilarious topic in the play was love because as it was seen, this emotion was taken as a joke. The book itself is a critic of many aspects from the Victorian era; however, Oscar Wilde wanted to make fun about upper classes exposing how they see normal things by means of trying to interpret love. In the other hand, Richard explains this unromantic fiction by the eyes of Oscar Wilde saying that this love story was not romantic at all.
I agree with the author of this article, the book presents a critic of the Victorian societies even when Oscar was emphasizing the upper classes. It is clear that the story for itself does not have a real importance, let say that we omit the criticism of the play. At the end, what we get is that the love story is not a real one because both couples did not feel the same for their “lovers”, for example, Cecile was not in love of Algernon, she was obsessed with an imaginary Earnest and Gwendoline did not love Jack, she was interested in Earnest. Even though, in the end of the play Jack becomes his cousin Earnest but Jack loved Gwendoline when he was not Earnest. The same occurred with Algy, he met Cecile when he was Algernon and Cecile did not love no one who was not Earnest. My argument is, neither the boys neither the girls were in love of the real person behind the name; the fourth of them were confused because what would had happened if at the end Jack-John haven not found his truth? I think they wouldn’t end as couples and everything probably have ended in disgrace.
In conclusion, I really like this comedy of manners; I found interesting how people behave in certain ways just by their society positions. This article grabs my attention because it deals with the interpretation of feelings and emotions and it showed me that this play is more than a critic of the Victorian era. The author gave an agreeable opinion of the main topic developed in the book which was love. This article and the play helped me to understand how classes were presented in that time but also it exposed me the upper classes evilness actions to lower societies, even when I was looking for other types of items related to my main topic. (evilness) However, this article is going to be necessary for me in order to prove that your class do not define what you really are and sometimes rich people behave more badly than poor people.
