Why Vanderbilt can win this game Despite watching three bowl selection committees pass over them, the Commodore fanbase responded by purchasing its full allotment of tickets and should have a visible home-field advantage in this game. The Commodores should be able to keep the Houston passing game in check with All-SEC safety Kenny Ladler and second-team cornerback Andre Hal. On offense, Franklin will look for ways to get the ball into the hands of star wide receiver Jordan Matthews, who is the most complete SEC wide receiver since A.J. Green. Vandy will use several quick-hitters and let Matthews do the rest. Outside of Matthews, the Commodores have not really been great at any one thing on offense. However, they make the most of their opportunities. The Commodores are currently No. 2 in the SEC in red-zone efficiency. Deciding factor of the game Can Houston find a way to run the ball against Vanderbilt? The Cougars' inability to run the ball this season has been problematic. The Cougars rank 82nd in average yards per carry, and there is no way they can beat the Commodores without running the ball successfully. The Commodores will have no problem stopping the Cougars’ passing game if there is no legitimate running threat. Predictions This game is not going to have a whole lot of fireworks. In fact, this will be a defensive battle. However, when a play needs to be made on offense, Jordan Matthews will make it. In the end, the Cougars’ inability to run the ball will be the nail in their coffin. Score Prediction: Vanderbilt 20, Houston 13 Stat Prediction: Jordan Matthews 100 yards receiving and one touchdown
