Energy efficiency has already been a key question for several years in the energy industry and that is why the Finnish industry has focused on developing advanced technology to promote it for a long time. The key issue is to decrease emissions through decreasing overall energy use. This means, in practice, more efficiency. The issue is the same in shipping and maritime operations as it is in power production and energy transmission and distribution. Today, the energy cluster and the marine cluster are technically EDITORIAL COORDINATOR Mirkka Lindroos very near to each other. They include corporate and organisational networks, which offer a good base for the European Energy Efficiency Platform. Energy efficiency is realised through practical projects, conducted by companies, either by themselves or in co-operation with other companies. This has been clearly visible in power plant projects. It has also been witnessed, for example, in municipal combined heat and power projects in which district heating and cooling are products which directly benefit taxpayers. A large cruise vessel and a small city are quite similar: both need lighting, warming and water treatment. This is a very important practical viewpoint considering the energy & marine cluster combination.
