Ice breaking vessels designed by ILS
I
LS has mainly worked in ice breaker and ice breaking vessel designs. One of the latest developments has been an ice
breaking archipelago ferry to Åland Community. The vessel is
designed mainly to Föglä traffic and is of a double ended ice
breaking ferry type.
The new ferry will have a length of 65.3m and breadth of
13m. The number of passengers is 250 maximum and the car
deck has been designed for heavy vehicles and also for cars which
also can be placed to hoistable car decks. The vessel shall be able
to break ice so that the traffic year around is possible.
The shipbuilding contract negotiations have been started
with BLRT shipyard in Tallinn and the contract is expected to be
signed still during January. The classification is Lloyds Register, The
main engines are 2 x Wärtsilä 9L20 and the propulsion units 2 x
Rolls Royce CP. The total power of the vessel is 2x1800 KW.
The vessel is expected to be delivered late 2008. ■

eltamarin Group extends consulting and engineering services in several fronts. A major contracting
services package was agreed with Hoegh Autoliners and
Nam Trieu Shipbuilding Industry Corporation in Vietnam.
A new approach is applied: full basic design package
including class documents together with procurement
handling is provided for the owner instead of the yard.
The owner has full ownership of the design. Yard master
plan and build strategy is provided for the yard together
with full detail design and workshop drawings.
This new prototype design car carrier PCTC of 7000
units is designed to high efficiency in overall configuration
and internal ramp and deck arrangement.
Hull form, propulsion system and superstructure are
optimised with computer fluid dynamics (CFD) software
and with extensive model tests.
Survivability is designed to the new probabilistic
damage stability rules and the full benefits of these rules
have been utilised by optimising the subdivision and
internal configuration.
Environmental and safety features are specified to
present and future rules and requirements. ■
