Fueled by deep emotional connection and spiritual bond, the album Colvin & Earle captures the once-in-a-lifetime magic of two extraordinary folk artists so in tune that they seem to be able to read each other's minds, creating a whole that is much greater than the (already great) sum of its parts. Both Colvin and Earle have played the Big Top before, Colvin only once in 2005, and Earle three times with his band The Dukes, most recently in 2012. "Steerage Song" is a docu-musical, blending the songs of 20 countries of Old Europe and the rhythms of Tin Pan Alley into a moving, fully-staged, new musical. The Duluth Playhouse joins Big Top Chautauqua in a grand collaboration featuring members of the Blue Canvas Orchestra and special guests in a moving, musical theatre piece originally produced by Theater Latte Da in Minneapolis. Ellis Island was the gateway to America – a land of opportunity for some, a land of exclusion for others. Packed into the steerage of steamships, they left their homelands with few possessions but a wealth of hope, promise and music. Fifty years ago, in 1966, the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band was founded in Long Beach, California. Featuring founding members Jeff Hanna and Jimmie Fadden, pl us Bob Carpenter and John McEuen, the band has performed at the Big Top nine times since 2003 and even produced a Live from the Big Top EP. The band's successes include several Grammy and CMA awards and nominations, the seminal 1972 album Will the Circle be Unbroken plus hit songs too numerous to mention including: "Mr. Bojangles," "An American Dream," "Make a Little Magic," and "Fishin' In the Dark."
