Big Top Chautauqua was founded in 1986 with a mission of creating a sense of community and a connection to the life and history of the Chequamegon Bay area , the state of Wisconsin , and the Upper Midwest . We are a 501 ( c )( 3 ) not-for-profit charitable organization that boasts over 25 years of producing and presenting “ year-round cultural activities that are both entertaining and educational with emphasis on excellent performances that celebrate history and the environment .” We perform during the summer in a 900-seat all canvas tent at the base of Mt . Ashwabay just south of Bayfield . We also perform on tour throughout the region , and over the airwaves on Tent Show Radio .
