Sea X Row (Interior Major Project) – Nkem Usiade | Page 19

Re-Design I felt my previous design was to plain, it didn’t carry any dynamic forms. The space looked structured and bland. I did a revamp and started looking into the forms of rowing. Chicago rowing club (page 10) used the rhythm of rowing to make their form, I looked at the curves of the boat and translated it to my design. The indoor rowing was big and couldn’t accommodate enough people so I pursued a more modern function to replace it. A VR rowing space is a better use of the space and applies to the strategies of Portsmouth council in establishing the seaside. I ripped sheets of paper from a spiral bound book. Using the cut trims I explored the tapered curve form of a rowing boat From my models from colour theory (page) I revisited the idea of ‘memory’ having wood panels looking as though they are ‘growing’ or have been exposed- this also reflects how the existing site is. Moss growing on the worn bricks of the club. Reception desk in centre, wood memory path. Wood covers the walls, floor and ceiling partially. 16
