What is Nuisance flooding? Flooding that closes coastal area roads, overwhelms storm drains, and destroys man made structures. It is not considered to affect households but plumbing and government owned buildings. The National Weather Service decides the local nuisance flood thresholds based on decades of observing a specific area.
From 1950 to 2014, the coastal areas analysed during this time had 95% or more of nuisance flood days that were concluded to be human caused, around 3,500 days.
