ABOUT SDN 1 SOKONG

In July and August of 2018, the northern regions of the island of Lombok, Indonesia, were struck by several major earthquakes, which caused hundreds of deaths and massive damage to houses and public infrastructure, including more than 600 school buildings. In the following months, the government, various NGOs, and private stakeholders began to rebuild and renovate some schools. Despite these efforts, there are still many schools trying to function without adequate learning spaces or facilities.

SDN 1Sokong Elementary School is one such school. The school is located in the Tanjung Region, North Lombok, and has a population of around 3,000, whose primary income is hospitality or coconut farming. The 2018 Lombok earthquakes destroyed ten classrooms. While the government has rebuilt six new classrooms after the earthquakes, the school needed more classrooms to accommodate its 212 students. The Block School classrooms constructed by Classroom of Hope Indonesia have provided four ready-to-use classrooms, fitted with lights, fans, and power points and fully furnished with desks, chairs, and whiteboards.
