sports coach UK Tutor Workshop Disclosure Guidance
What to do if a child makes an abuse disclosure during a Sports Coach UK
Safeguarding workshop
Child makes a disclosure during workshop.
Listen carefully to what the child tells you. Do not give any assurances of confidentiality. Make a
record of anything the child has said and/or what has been observed and the action you took, if
possible with dates and times.
If you feel a child is in immediate danger then always call the police immediately.
Immediately report your concern to the lead welfare/child protection officer of the governing body of
sport concerned, who should be trained to take the appropriate action. Information on the lead
welfare officer for each sport can be found on the CPSU website:
https://thecpsu.org.uk/help-advice/deal-with-a-concern
If there is no governing body of sport to report the concern to then refer the matter directly to the
local children’s social care (social services), or if this is not possible then report to the police using
the 101 number.
Report the incident to Sports Coach UK’s Coaching Children Lead David Turner
[email protected] who will log the incident in line with CPSU guidance.
If an adult makes a disclosure on a workshop, please ensure this person is provided with
information and support to ensure they are aware of how to report any incidents to the
police and where they can find support in dealing with abuse. If you believe the adult is
at risk then you should report the information to the local adult social care services.
If you are uncertain as to what to do at any stage, contact the sport’s lead welfare or
child protection Officer, the NSPCC free 24-hour helpline 0808-800 5000 or the Sports
Coach UK Children Lead David Turner on 07974 015 769.
