Remember Sarah Conner ? One of BSAC ’ s finest , she was one of the youngest Regional Coaches , a biologist and conservationist who fulfilled her dream by working for BBC ’ s Natural History Unit . She was an assistant producer on the team that brought us the triumphant Blue Planet 2 , and still found time to analyse incidents for SCUBA ’ s ( currently dormant ) Taking Control pages .
Now Sarah is back , having been promoted to the heights of Producer and Director .
Her new documentary is out now on Netflix , and carries an impressive pedigree in that the narration is provided by none other than Barack Obama , 44th President of the USA . Sarah ’ s film is the fourth episode in the documentary series , Our Great National Parks , which makes the case for the conservation value of protected parks worldwide .
Sarah ’ s film is set in Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary , California . This muchstudied stretch of coast and ocean is home to the equivalent of an undersea Grand Canyon ,
and is host to some spectacular wildlife events .
The film contains many highlights , but Sarah ’ s stand-out sequence was filming a mother sea otter and her new-born pup . “ We had seen her the day before , sleeping alone on the pontoon ,” Sarah recalls . “ The next day we found her floating with a tiny ball of fluff on her tummy . Very carefully from a distance , we filmed the pup ’ s first few weeks of life . The mum swam around soothing her pup , feeding and cleaning it , keeping it dry and warm .
