Below the
Skyeline
Retired police diver Gill Williams moved to the Isle of Skye to embark on a project recording the beauty of the island ’ s seascapes
The Below the Skyeline project is a joint venture between Gill Williams and Geraint Ashton-Jones , who both live on the magical Isle of Skye . Gill Williams ’ life has always revolved around water , from her early years with her dad teaching her to swim in the Thames , to a 30-year career in the police , including work as a police diver for 24 years . She had never dived prior to starting that part of her career and had to attend an eight-week Basic Police Diving Course at the National Police Diving School in Northumbria . After that she quickly worked her way through various recreational courses in the late 1980s and early 90s , including several BSAC qualifications .
Gill has always loved the outdoors , adventure and nature . She sails , kayaks , wild swims and climbs mountains . When she moved up to Skye after retiring in 2010 , she formed an outdoor swimming group encouraging others to enjoy the hidden world , which she calls ‘ Below the Skyeline ’.
Geraint Ashton Jones had a long career with the Royal Navy – above the water – and has enjoyed a second career as a professional photographer concentrating mainly on sports . However , he shares the same love of the outdoors and activities on the water as Gill .
On retirement Gill took up photography – this is where she and Geraint teamed up for their collaboration .
