Hartford SAC is on the up, moving to a new clubhouse and looking for fresh funding solutions. Interview by Kristina Pedder

Hartford Sub Aqua Club has recently turned 60 and shows no signs of slowing down. To celebrate, members clocked up more than 60 dive sites in a year, dropping a commemorative slate into Coniston Water( purely for historical reasons … and a bit of depth progression).

Club trips for 12 somehow always become 24 +, because no one gets left behind. Some cook, some wash up, some bring alarming quantities of cake, and others make sure cylinders are filled. Everyone gets involved to their strengths. It works, it’ s fun and it’ s very much a team effort.

Tell us about the club’ s history
Hartford sub Aqua Club started life in 1964 as an evening class at Hartford Tech College, with membership costing a guinea( under-18s) or two( over-18s). The first dive was at Porth Diana near Trearddur Bay. The club joined BSAC in 1972. We’ re lucky to have the committee minutes from these early meetings; they show that while kit has improved, the debates haven’ t. Do we need a portable compressor? Can we justify a boat? Who’ s looking after the kit? What do we do with all these trainees? Some things never change.
