The RNLI boat being prepared for the presentation as a youngster , and later Tony Green , both OWIs , contacted and joined the group . John is currently working through his Dive Leader qualification ; he is now an Assistant Diving Instructor ( IFC ) and a snorkelling instructor .
Where do you meet for club nights ?
We use Ashton Pools on Water Street . Since lockdown we have grown in number , which has given us the opportunity to extend our pool times , splitting snorkelling and scuba to give both students and instructors more space . From 1 April 2022 , we have had two pool sessions on Friday evenings : from 7.30-8.30pm we go snorkelling ; from 8.30-9.30pm we do scuba . At present we have 10 scuba divers in training and more snorkellers . We often host pool events too .
What sort of pool events ?
In the spring , we put out a call for our members to take part in our sponsored snorkel , the May Day Mile . The idea is to swim a metric mile – 60 lengths – to raise money for the RNLI . On 6 May 2022 , 20 members , young and old , took part and raised £ 1,600 .
For Father ’ s Day this year we held a celebration event , where snorkel students were invited to bring their dads along for a free snorkelling lesson .
We also hold a Halloween fancy dress pool party when we go into the pool in fancy dress and have fun and games during the session , using spooky floats . There ’ s a post-pool party with a small buffet afterwards in the canteen . Prizes are given out for best fancy dress and a pumpkin carving competition ; the students are invited to bring along a friend too .
The presentation is made !
