Located just off the coast of Ayia Napa , the Museum of Underwater Sculpture – or MUSAN – is based on the concept of an underwater forest , with eerie figures and kelp-like botanical structures creating a surreal site for divers and snorkellers to visit . The sculptures were commissioned by the Cypriot Department of Fisheries and Marine Research and the Ministry of Tourism at a cost of one million Euros .

All 93 of the human and botanical sculptures are by British artist , Jason deCaires Taylor , who also created the world ’ s largest underwater sculpture park , Cancún Underwater Museum in Mexico . The materials used for the latest MUSAN sculptures have been designed to attract marine life , so will ultimately create an artificial reef .
