CLUB: Warwick University Sub Aqua Club DESTINATION: Malta
OBJECTIVES: Our yearly international club trip was very successful – we got to experience a variety of wreck and reef dives. Our spare moments were spent with outings and social events- perfect for celebrating the end of the spring term.
Warwick University headed to Malta for wrecks and warm water to mark the end of their spring term
THE TRIP: We headed to Malta for nine nights and five days of diving. These were the first dives for some newly-qualified Ocean Divers, but it’ s safe to say everyone was looking forward to warm water dives. Our centre, Divewise, guided us on some incredible sites. Our wreck dives included the HMS Maori, MV Rozi, P29, Um El Faroud, and the X Lighter 127, which were fascinating to look at as pieces of history. More experienced divers in our group had the privilege of exploring the engine rooms.
Around the reefs and wrecks we spotted nudibranchs and cornetfish, scorpionfish, rainbow wrasse, flying gurnards, and moray eels poking out of wrecks. Some members were lucky enough to see an octopus! We took a day trip to Gozo as well and the earlier
wake-up times were definitely worth it. The Inland Sea and Blue Hole were very scenic, colourful, and had incredible cave structures.
When not diving, our members were exploring Valletta and Mdina, enjoying meals out together, or wandering around Sliema’ s beaches. Who knew St Patrick’ s Day was so popular in Malta? At the end of a long day, our accommodation’ s rooftop terrace was the perfect place to relax with some Cisk.
LOGBOOK MOMENT: After our last diving day, our dive centre threw us a pizza party! It was a lovely end to the week and allowed us to recount diving memories over our second favourite activity( food and beer) while the sun set. The trip definitely gave us lasting friendships and memories. We can’ t wait until next year!
