Trigger happy
A STRIKING IMAGE OF A TRIGGERFISH in UK waters has been revealed as the August winner of the # DiveWithBSAC photo and video competition , bringing the summer 2023 campaign to a close .
Launched earlier this year , the # DiveWithBSAC initiative invited members to share the photos and videos which best summed up their club diving and snorkelling over the summer .
With two monthly prizes – July and August – the diver behind August ’ s winning image , East Cheshire SAC member , Meg Barstow , is now the proud owner of a new pair of Weezle undersuit boots .
The aim of the # DiveWithBSAC initiative was to inspire others to explore the underwater world and discover the best of club diving and snorkelling with BSAC . Thanks to the DiveWithBSAC hashtag ,
They are also available in two formats : as a stainless-steel ring bound set of slates , or as a set of pages in Dive Logs ’ wet note system . Both are printed on 0.3mm thick matt polyester that can be written on with a pencil and erased using a standard plastic eraser . The slates are tearproof and waterproof , providing years of durable use for BSAC instructors .
The new slates will be produced and shipped for customers on demand so will always be the latest version . Alternatively , designs are also available in the instructor materials section on bsac . com under each diver grade as a free download for members to print and laminate .
The new slates are available to buy now from bsac . com / slates
members were able share their images via their own social media , meaning they could also promote their own club to a wider audience .
Now that the 2023 competition is closed , BSAC ’ s Head of Community , Debbie Powell said that the initiative had led to an inspiring selection of members ’ photos and videos being shared and viewed across various digital platforms . “# DiveWithBSAC was designed to showcase just what makes diving with BSAC so special and the wide array of images and videos certainly did that . “ It ’ s been wonderful to see how vibrant the BSAC diving community is , and the positive impact scuba and snorkelling has on so many people . So , I ’ d like to say thank you to everyone who took part . And to – keep sharing ! If members continue to share their pictures and videos , and link in their club where appropriate , it will help spread the word about BSAC .”

Meet John Gibbons , BSAC Council member , who is reaching out to other water users
HELLO ! I ’ M NOW ABOUT HALFWAY through my term as a member of BSAC Council , where I try to bring new and fresh ideas on how we can raise the profile of BSAC beyond our existing community of divers . The idea is to reach out to the wild swimmers , paddleboarders and surfers , who share our concern for the environment and the quality of our rivers and seas .
As long as I can remember , I always wanted to learn to dive . However , growing up in the Mid-West of America far from the sea and being a terrible swimmer made this life goal a bit difficult . I moved to the UK in 1982 and finally got my chance to learn when I joined the University of London Sub-Aqua Club ( ULSAC ).
From that moment on , my life was changed . ULSAC was an incredibly active club and once I finished my Novice Diver training it was off to Fort Bovisand for Sports Diver training and eventually to Advanced Instructor a few years later . It opened my eyes to the beauty of the UK coastline , as well as creating friends for life .
Stealing a quote from the actor Matthew McConaughey , diving for me is about “ meeting new people and doing cool things ” and what can be cooler than exploring the silent word beneath our seas with friends , and creating stories to inspire the next generation of divers !
Many of those friends have hung up their fins now , but that doesn ’ t stop me from giving them a little nudge every now and again to see if they might fancy squeezing into their old drysuits . A few have rekindled their passion and I hold out hope to get a few more back in the water one day .
