Your training options explained

As a BSAC member you have access to multiple training options , giving you the flexibility to learn at your own pace and in your preferred way .

In person or online
Training may begin with in-person theory lessons at a club or training centre . Alternatively , you could start studying at home with BSAC eLearning , which can be accessed online . A range of diver grades ( Ocean Diver right up to Dive Leader ) are now available via eLearning , as are Skill Development Courses ( SDCs ) such as Oxygen Administration , with more due to roll out soon .
For diver grade courses , club members are best to speak to their Diving Officer ( or Training Officer if the club has one ), who can advise training materials and explain where and when courses will run . Your training might be organised in different ways , for example , doing all the theory sessions in one weekend or doing one a week over several weeks . Or , some clubs and training centres now prefer using eLearning for the theory training .
Your club or training centre will want to make sure that you are safe and happy underwater , which means they ’ ll be looking after you through your training so that you can be a safe diver while doing lots of exciting diving .
Regional training opportunities
If you ’ ve missed part of a training course then consider booking onto a regional training day , which will focus on the things you may have missed , or parts that are difficult for your club to teach ( the idea is each event is tailored to what the participants need ).
SDCs such as Chartwork and Position Fixing , Compressor Operation or First
Aid for Divers can often be completed at a club or training centre . However , members are free to book onto the extensive scheduled programme of SDCs run around the UK by BSAC ’ s regional teams .
Becoming an instructor
BSAC ’ s Instructor Training Scheme ( ITS ) also schedules a wide variety of instructor training events up and down the UK throughout the year , if you ’ re planning to do something amazing and become an instructor . Divers need to get to Sports Diver level ( and be 18 +) and snorkellers just need to be aged 16 or over to take the first step towards becoming an instructor . More at bsac . com / instruct
