COURSE OF THE MONTH

Compressor Operation

One of BSAC ’ s most popular club Skill Development Courses ( SDCs ), Compressor Operation is open to both divers and nondivers and is the ideal way to learn how to use the club compressor and confidently fill diving cylinders to the required safety standards .
Following a review of the Compressor Operation SDC , key updates have now been made to reflect the latest legislation and best practice .
Clubs with their own compressors may wish to run this course themselves , though the Compressor Operation SDC is available to all via the Regionally organised programme of events ( bookable at bsac . com / events ). The course is a practical way to get non-divers involved in the club , especially if they have family members who dive . No diving qualification is necessary to take part .
You will learn about the design and working parts of gas compressors , and the air quality that divers need and how to test for it . You will also learn about cylinder regulations and become competent at compressor operation and cylinder filling .
The half-day course consists of four theory sessions , an open forum , and a practical session . You ’ ll have plenty of time to practice the skills needed to fill cylinders and will get plenty of feedback from course instructors .
This is a continually assessed course , during which students must reach the required performance standards .
Having completed the Compressor Operation course , you will have been trained to a reasonable level in filling diving cylinders from a high-pressure gas compressor . You ’ ll be better able to help operate the club compressor or use a portable compressor on club trips .
