Earlier this year I brought together a group of divers for a trip to parts of the North of Scotland which our skipper Bob Anderson introduced to us as the Outliers : uninhabited islands and exposed rocky outcrops far from civilization but teeming with underwater interest . These outposts are not for the fainthearted , but rewarding to the intrepid . This was not my first visit : my initial dives in these locations a couple of years ago had made an impression and I wanted to share my excitement with others .

We conducted a couple of warm-up dives on light cruisers in Scapa Flow while we waited for the right weather window to appear , and although those are great dives in their own right , you didn ’ t come here to read about those , so I ’ ll move on . I can ’ t not mention Nipple Rock , to the west of Orkney , which was our jump-off point for heading west , and was a stunning wall in crystal clear water , with a pair of crayfish awaiting us in the depths . But as it ’ s not an Outlier either , I ’ ll reluctantly move on again .
