With access to some high-quality diving , this Northern Ireland club is essentially a big family , and has some great methods for keeping up skills training
Newry and Mourne Sub Aqua Club in Northern Ireland was formed in the 1970s and officially affiliated with BSAC in 1973 . This club , like most others , has had its highs and lows , but has always got through . Today , a great bunch of members keeps NAMSAC going , promoting the diving activities for all .
The club has a lot of interesting local sea dives , including wrecks such as SS Hunsdon , SS Neotsfield and SS Bangor , and a threehour drive to Malin Head gives access to many iconic First and Second World War wrecks . However , much of the club ’ s diving takes place on their doorstep in Carlingford and Strangford Loughs .
The craic is great at the club ’ s weekly dives ; usually there are nights out at the end of summer and at Christmas , but unfortunately Covid has curtailed these in recent times . The club ’ s 40th anniversary celebrations were a great success , and celebrating 50 years as a club is coming up in 2023 .
Where are you based ?
Our club is based in Newry , Co . Down . The city is situated on Carlingford Lough , an internationally important bird and biodiversity area , sheltered by mountains on both the north and south sides . Offshore diving is a short drive away from our base .
What is your mission ?
Our aim as a club is to support the diving ambitions of all who join . We cater for a diverse group of opencircuit and closed-circuit divers . We are fortunate to have a wide range of sites around the coast of Ireland , from scenic dives such as the drop-off in Strangford Lough to the war wrecks off Malin Head . We try to organise at least one trip abroad a year : this year , as a result of travel restrictions , we spent a week at Scapa Flow .
