Rebirth of a RIB

AS PART OF OUR 70TH anniversary in 2024, Bournemouth & Poole SAC( branch 006) ran a major fundraising campaign throughout the year, raising over £ 10,000, with the result that in December the club RIB was sent in to have its ageing tubes replaced. At the same time, essential repairs to damaged areas of fibreglass which only came to light when the old tubes came off were also repaired.
Following completion of the re-tubing, fibreglass repairs and general servicing and overhaul, a re-launch party was held in Poole Harbour on a very chilly Saturday 15 March, attended by present and former members of the club.
Special thanks should go to Dave Telling and Ian Pyle for undertaking the bulk of the work to see the project through to getting the boat back in the water, and to Mike Doswell for negotiating the intricacies of applying to the Sports Council, which resulted in a very welcome grant of £ 2,500. I WAS INTERESTED TO READ THE TWO Sophies’ thoughts on the controlled buoyant lift( CBL) in the April edition. I have been teaching this since the 1980s and as such, have seen the technique evolve as gear has changed. It was encouraging to see the variations in equipment mentioned and I would

Funding feat

WE WERE RECENTLY AWARDED A £ 500 grant from Legacy Leisure for the purchase of equipment for the club. The funding has allowed the club to purchase some basic scuba equipment for use by trainees, try divers and members. As a very new club, we are just getting established and the support from a community organisation such as Legacy Leisure is invaluable.
Being able to acquire equipment means that we can offer opportunities for local people to try scuba diving without having to make a big financial commitment until they are confident that they want to progress. Open water swimming has become very popular, but many people wonder what lies beneath the water and scuba diving offers that opportunity. As a small, friendly local club for local people, we are now able to offer the opportunities to try and train in scuba diving to local people, especially those under-represented in sport, such as young people and women. Peter Michael Frost – a tribute

PETER FROST, FORMER DIVING Officer( DO) of Newark Sub-Aqua, club died on 5 March this year, aged 78. He became a BSAC Advanced Instructor and was a member of Newark Sub-Aqua Club, serving as DO for many happy years.
He formed Dive Barracuda shop and Dive School with his wife Jane in 1987. The Dive School qualified many divers through their premises at Kimberley and also enjoyed on-site training at many schools, including Rugby School, Trent College, Stamford School, Worksop College and Wellow School. Dive holidays, shop sales and servicing were a part of his daily life. Throughout this time lifelong friendships were formed.
While running Dive Barracuda, Pete was
urge people to think about various kit configurations in a rescue scenario as part of dive planning every time. Having lifted an unconscious diver in a real emergency, I would also stress the importance of regular practice. Rescue skills need to be instinctive and I’ m glad to say when it came to the crunch, I was able to conduct the rescue with relative ease, although, to be fair, the casualty was my wife... asked to take on the role of Regional Coach for the East Midlands, a role he carried out willingly for the full term of this appointment. Pete trained and eventually became a Scuba Schools International Instructor Certifier and taught that system of diving through Barracuda to students for many years. Pete and Jane shared some of their hobbies when time allowed, among them mountain biking, music( mostly Elvis), photography, socialising, and a great interest in all things automotive based, including his Harley motorbike. Most of all he enjoyed time with the children and grandchildren. Pete spent a lifetime engaging with his pets, mostly dogs; life was a joy for Pete. He is survived by his wife Jane, his sons and their families. Alan Sime
