Coming to a club near you …
BSAC HAS LAUNCHED AN INITIATIVE which will see focused visits to clubs around the country to find out how best they can be supported.
As part of her‘ Becks on Tour’ project, BSAC member Becks Martin will be spending the next few months on the road to gather feedback from clubs. The initiative supports BSAC’ s strategy, which highlights the need to support clubs and ensure value for BSAC members.
Training Officer at Bedford Scuba Divers, Becks first came to BSAC HQ’ s attention when she participated in a workshop on club support at last year’ s BSAC Diving Conference. Following the success of the workshop, Becks offered to take the idea‘ on the road’.
With numerous telephone calls to branch officers and seven club visits already under her belt, and more in the pipeline, Becks said the feedback so far has been really encouraging.
“ Everyone has been incredibly welcoming, and it’ s been exciting to visit clubs and see differences in how they run, from training regimes, lifeguard teams, equipment storage, to trips”
After every visit, Becks feeds her findings back to BSAC HQ so that a bespoke support plan can be put in place.
“ It’ s helping us understand where there are gaps in training or support to clubs,” Becks explained.“ I’ m from the Eastern Region, so I thought I’ d start there! Clubs in my area have struggled to develop their OWIs to become Boat Handling Instructors. I’ ve been working with our new regional coach, James Soos, to focus on linking clubs together to develop instructors and provide sought-after SDCs. I’ m looking forward to doing this with more Regional Coaches as the scheme progresses and meeting more clubs in other areas of the UK.“ As I gather more information, I’ d like
Becks Martin( in blue polo shirt) visits Chillington Divers to share the different approaches to club life, as every club runs slightly differently. Learning about different approaches may help clubs grow or make club management easier for our volunteers.”
BSAC CEO Mary Tetley, who is working closely with Becks on the project, said the contacts made so far had gleaned invaluable information on how clubs can be better supported.
“ This initiative is an excellent way for individual clubs to highlight the issues they are facing. It also allows us to share successful club strategies that can benefit the wider BSAC club network and its members.” she added.
If your club would be interested in speaking to Becks or arranging a visit, you can email her at becks. martin @ bsac. com
