Heinke Trophy 2024
Could your club be the next winner ?
BSAC ’ S PREMIER AWARD , THE HEINKE Trophy , is live for 2024 , and all clubs are invited to take part . Now in its 66th year , the trophy is awarded to the BSAC club considered to have done the most to further the interests of its members and BSAC .
Following BSAC ’ s 70th anniversary , the Heinke Trophy 2024 aims to show how our clubs are rising to the challenges of recent years to continue training , diving and thriving .
With 2024 a key year for the BSAC strategy , the award adjudicators are particularly keen for clubs to showcase their expedition and environmental project work , their training initiatives , ways in which they have connected with others to build the BSAC community and increased the skills and capabilities within their club .
Participating clubs must register their interest in this year ’ s Heinke Trophy by 30 June and submit their final Heinke report by 15 September . Each report should cover the period 1 January to 31 December 2023 and showcase a year in the life of their club .
Heinke Trophy adjudicators Phil Harrison , MBE , Tony Marshall , and Kevin Phillips hoped that as many clubs as possible would participate in the 2024 Heinke Trophy .
“ Entering the Heinke Trophy offers clubs the chance to show how they have celebrated the past 70 years of BSAC and to put the spotlight on their own diving and club activities . By sharing these experiences , other clubs and BSAC diving as a whole will also benefit ,” Phil Harrison explained .
The winner of the Heinke Trophy 2024 will be announced at the end of September before being presented with the trophy at the BSAC Diving Conference on 19 October . The winning club will also receive a cheque for £ 1,000 to spend on its activities .
How to enter the Heinke Trophy 2024
The Heinke Trophy is open to BSAC clubs of all sizes – UK-based and overseas , diving or snorkelling ( or both ), well-established or new .
Interested clubs have until 30 June to register their intention to enter .

NDO Dai Atkins signs off after six years in the role
SIX YEARS AGO I GOT HANDED THIS sort of … delicate crystal orb , if you will , and told in no uncertain terms not to drop it , or let it roll under the boat . There may be a few dents , but it ’ s still intact and fully functioning . Phew !
Who knew the role of National Diving Officer would come with more than just the responsibility of awarding certificates and swords ? Add to those privileges : ensuring our products and services are safe to deliver ; keeping compliant with internationally recognised standards ; managing the desires of an enthusiastic team of specialist experts – alongside a limited resource of HQ staff – and upholding quality of delivery by robustly trained instructors .
Our instructors give up their time voluntarily to keep the BSAC machinery turning . They are all focused on a common goal : to give our members the best British diving on offer .
Over the past six years we ’ ve generated 95 Discovery Divers , 7,916 Ocean Divers , 4,118 Sports Divers , 1,341 Dive Leaders , 354 Advanced Divers , 33 First Class Divers , 1,838 Assistant Diving Instructors , 1,031 Open Water Instructors , 64 Advanced Instructors , 60 Instructor Trainers , 18 National Instructors and a whole raft of many other qualifications it ’ s been a pleasure to have overseen !
Not forgetting the release of courses such as Sports Diver 2020 , Advanced Ocean Diver , Wreck Surveyor , AED Awareness , CCR MOD1 and MOD2 , Dive Leader 2023 , Diving for All Buddies & Managers , Underwater Surveyor , CCR Liberty , many of which are now delivered in part through eLearning or via online means . They may be signed up via the BSAC App ( over 65,000 lessons to date !) and all created by the fantastic volunteer machine , despite the added challenge of navigating the Covid era – what a ride !
I wish my successor even greater success as I pass on the orb . Please don ’ t drop it ! Iechyd Da !
