Elegant anemones at Boreray
West side of Boreray
This site was a necessary plan B . We knew that our luck with the weather couldn ’ t hold much longer , so overnight we ’ d planned the most epic day we could think of : back to enticing Levenish , with a second dive at Whale Rock . Sadly , the weather was not going to allow us a last hurrah , and we woke to harsh easterly winds and a building swell . The safest option was to tuck in on the sheltered side of Boreray and dive another colourful wall ( no hardship ). I took advantage of the imperfect conditions to put on a macro lens , which I could never quite manage to make myself do in the incredible vistas of the preceding days . Colourful life and , lucky us , another pretty curled octopus .
On surfacing the conditions were certainly not improving , so we bid a reluctant farewell to St Kilda and spent the next six hours or so on the crossing back . Our next dive would be on the relatively close-to-home Outer Hebrides , somewhere around the Sound of Harris .
Final thoughts
One week is just not long enough to do this place justice , especially when weather windows snatch some of the precious opportunities away . As

documented by Gordon Ridley and his expedition forces , there are still so many sites to explore . I ’ ll certainly be taking my chances on another trip ; this year , I hope .
