BSAC back to schools

BSAC IS AIMING TO GET MORE schoolchildren into snorkelling , protecting the marine environment , and outdoor adventure through a new school outreach programme .
A team of BSAC snorkelling instructors , led by BSAC Coaching Advisor Mark Paisey , are currently working with eight schools to deliver snorkel training .
The team will also use this teaching opportunity to highlight environmental projects with BSAC partner , the Marine Conservation Society ( MCS ) as well as promoting scuba diving and the Duke of Edinburgh Scheme .
The intention of the project , says Mark , is to introduce young people to the benefits of snorkelling while raising awareness of the issues faced by our oceans and engaging them in real environmental projects .
“‘ The school partnership scheme offers snorkel or dive training integrated with environmental eLearning ahead of environmental project participation ,” he says . “ The scheme develops awareness of the ocean issues relevant today and offers a means to get involved .”
The eight schools who have so far signed up for the project include The Stroud in Romsey and Meoncross in Fareham , with more set to follow later in the year .
BSAC will deliver snorkel instruction to groups of pupils , with follow-up online sessions on the marine environment . MCS and BSAC have partnered together to encourage new snorkellers to gain more knowledge about the environment , and how they can get involved in projects such as litter cleans and environmental network groups via MCS .
MCS will also support teachers with teaching aids and online learning about protecting the oceans .
Rachael Wright , MCS Education Officer , welcomed the opportunity to work with BSAC on the school partnership scheme .
The BSAC team is now working to get more schools involved with the project . For more information and how your school can get involved , email Mark Paisey at coach . leader @ bsac . com

Return of Diver Training Days

AFTER A TWO-YEAR HIATUS DUE TO COVID , BSAC ’ S POPULAR Diver Training Days are back on track , with the first six sessions now scheduled and more in the pipeline .
Created to offer additional practical support as divers progress through their training , the Diver Training Days have previously proved invaluable to many BSAC members .
Regionally organised , the days can help members working through their Discovery Diver , Ocean Diver , Advanced Ocean Diver , Sports Diver , Dive Leader , and Advanced Diver courses . They can also support members looking to gain or brush up on specific diving skills that may not be available in-branch , due to lack of instructors . Members can also use the days to catch up on any missed training session , such as rescue skills .
This means that the sessions can also benefit BSAC clubs as well as members , says BSAC Head of Diving and Training , Dom Robinson .
“ It is great to see our Regional Teams being so flexible by providing opportunities for members to have their bespoke training needs met . It is hoped that as many people as possible will take advantage of them !”
The six scheduled Regional Training Days can now be booked at bsac . com / trainingdays
Members can also request a Training Day if one is not available for their area by contacting their Regional Coach .
