50 years underwater for the mighty Thore

DIVER THORE DAHL HAS JUST CELEBRATED HALF A CENTURY as a BSAC member , after joining Kingston SAC back in 1971 .
84-year-old Thore , who originally hails from Sweden , caught the scuba bug when he moved to Jamaica just over 50 years ago with his work as a marine engineer . Learning to dive with Kingston Branch 51 , he qualified as a Third Class Diver by the end of 1971 , sparking his lifelong love of the sport .
Thore went on to become a BSAC Instructor as well as Chairman of Branch 51 . Now retired , the father of two still lives in Kingston and remains an active diver , diving most weekends to add to his 3,380 plus dives logged during his 50-year BSAC scuba journey .
“ I am now on logbook number 72 ,” says Thore , who shows no sign of slowing down .
“ I have fantastic dive partners here in Jamaica who assist me with the equipment and make sure I am comfortable .
“ To be a BSAC member has meant a world of diving to me . I have travelled extensively and dived most oceans , including dives in the Arctic and Antarctica .”
With no plans to hang up his fins , Thore said he is always looking forward to his next dive .
“ My doctor said to me , ‘ Thore , if you love your diving and feel fine when doing it , keep doing it !’ I can truly say that diving is one of the major factors that keeps me ticking and when I am underwater , I am no more than 30 years old and am just enjoying life .”
